ABOUT

Welcome to the Thrasin Trout, a site dedicated to my obsession and passion for all things fly fishing.

I have been pursuing fish in one way or another for my entire life.

Some of my earliest memories are of toting a cane pole or Zebco to the farm ponds which dotted my Kentucky hometown with my Dad in search of bass, bluegill and catfish.  However, when I was about 9 or 10 my Dad became interested in fly fishing and being the sort of person he is, jumped in with both feet; and me, being the sort of person I am, followed.  We were among the founding members of the area FFF chapter, B.U.F.F and it was there I cut my teeth on fly fishing and fly tying.  During the late 70s my Dad and I would take a yearly trip to Maryland for a Father/Son Fly Fishing camp called The Brotherhood of the Jungle Cock which was a “Teach a kid to fish” sort of affair.  There I had the opportunity to learn casting from greats like Lefty Kreh or fly tying from Poul Jorgensen. I took to fly fishing like a fish to water and never looked back.

I fished regularly in small Appalachian streams, the smoky mountains and of course farm ponds but always harbored a dream of moving west.  Life eventually did take me west, albeit Las Vegas, but at least it was closer to the water I always saw myself fishing and was able to fish regulary in southern UT, CA and parts of NV.

For the past five years I’ve spend half my year in southwest Montana where I run a camp on the bank of the Gallatin River and this past year finally moved here permenately.  Hopefully.

My hope for this blog is to be an outlet for not only my personal fly fishing experiences but a catch all place for all things fly fishing and fly tying.

Enjoy, please come back often and feel free to comment or suggest content anytime.
